New Cambridge neighbourhood announced alongside multiplex

A new Cambridge subdivision was announced in southeast Galt, where the city's long awaited recreation multiplex is also planned.

Mayor Kathryn McGarry making the announcement Wednesday morning at the new housing development dubbed “Southpoint,” part of the community hub planned at Dundas Street and Branchton Road

“We can't be more excited, and I do have to thank former mayor Doug Craig, former councillor members, our regional council, and all of the partners that have gotten us to this incredibly exciting moment,” she said.

The developers, Polocorp and Gemini Homes, are planning over 300 homes in the area—a mixture of single, town and apartments housing—with over 26,500 residents estimated to move in. McGarry compares it to like having another small town within the city, similar to Galt, Preston and Hespeler.

Southpoint will also feature a new elementary school from each of the Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Catholic District School Board.

The multiplex itself, now called the “Cambridge Recreation Complex” will be a 25 meter swimming pool, leisure pool and warm water/therapy pool, gymnasiums, a fitness track and multi-purpose rooms, and branch location of Idea Exchange (Cambridge Public Library).

“And if you have the vision to look past some of the rolling hills that we see here, and sort of envision well-planned streets, different styles of housing, and this new incredible community hub where people can be welcomed into the new community,” McGarry said.

The City of Cambridge is currently in the process of sorting out designs and permits around the Recreation Complex, with shovels expected to break ground sometime in 2022. The opening is set for sometime in 2025.
