Cause of massive townhouse complex fire still undetermined

There's still a lot of unanswered questions after Monday night’s massive fire in a Kitchener neighbourhood.

A townhouse complex that was under construction on Morrison Road was engulfed, and flames and smoke could be seen from miles away.

No one was injured but 25 units were largely destroyed.

Kitchener's Chief Fire Prevention Officer, Tom Ruggle, said the cause of the blaze has been deemed undetermined.

“We completed our investigation yesterday, at that time the building development was handed back to the property owner. Clean-up and restoration work will now begin at the site,” said Ruggle.

He noted that the investigation isn't over, “The file never closes, especially with a fire of this magnitude.”

He said when new information comes in, investigators will continue to re-evaluate.

Kitchener Fire's evaluation of the scene on Tuesday was inconclusive. While factors like electricity and gas were ruled out, there was very little evidence left at the scene.

Damage is still estimated around $2-million, but Ruggle admitted it will likely be a bit north of that when all is said and done.
