Illegal dumping a year-round issue: region

By Aastha Shetty

Some local residents are saying they've noticed more illegal dumping since the start of the pandemic.

The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo both say however, that there has not been an increase in illegal dumping cases in their area.

Cari Rastas-Howard from Region of Waterloo Waste Management says there may be many reasons why there seems to be more roadside dumping.

“We have had to cut back on some of our other programs, which is why the public drop-off for waste at the region’s landfill is closed. We do encourage residents – rather than leaving those items curbside, to bring it back in for the time being.”

She says illegal dumping is a year-round problem in Waterloo Region.

“Residents are finding it inconvenient for our transfer stations to be closed. However, there are commercial options available. It’s an unfortunate decision that some people are making to dump items by the side of the road, rather than to go through the appropriate channels.”

She says we also may see more garbage on the road during this time of the year as snow melts in the spring.

The maximum fine for illegal dumping in Kitchener and Waterloo is $5,000.
