Kitchener Rangers trim roster down to 23 players

By Mark Pare

Just 23 players remain on the Kitchener Rangers roster.

This comes after a three-day training camp, capped off with Wednesday's intersquad game.

The team reassigned 15 players, including nine forwards, three defensemen and three goaltenders.

  • FORWARDS: Matthew Sop, Mitchell Martin, Ryan Walker, Logan Gallagher, Brendan Andersen, Matthew McCullough, Anthony Pinelli, Andrew Aboumassa, Mark McIntosh.
  • DEFENSE: Noah Prudhomme, Cameron Vassos, Peyton Adams-Matthews.
  • GOALIES: Dalton McBride, Diego D'Alessandro, Justin Wu.

Remaining on the roster are 12 forwards, eight defensemen and three goalies.

The group of forwards was seemingly set going in, with nine guys who saw action with the Blueshirts a year ago.

(Riley Damiani, Graham Dickerson, Isaac Langdon, Greg Meireles, Mike Petizian, Joseph Serpa, Ryan Stepien, Reid Valade, Jonathan Yantsis.)

But after a tough camp, a pair from the 2019 draft class survived the cuts in first rounder Francesco Pinelli and fourth rounder Jesse Fishman.

Declan McDonnell (3rd round, 2018) rounds out the list headed into the weekend.

On defense, Mike Vukojevic, Justin MacPherson, Donovan Sebrango, Arber Xhekaj and Joseph Rupoli are back, joined by the two players selected in the CHL Import Draft (Ville Ottavainen, Axel Bergkvist) and another 2019 fourth round selection in Simon Motew.

In net, it is the two incumbents in overager Luke Richardson and Lucas Pfeil, along with Jacob Ingham, who the Rangers got via trade from Mississauga in the offseason.

Yantsis and Meireles are the other two overagers, but the team is leaving Joe Garreffa on the OA list, in case he makes a return.

The Preseason Showcase starts Friday when Saginaw and Peterborough play at The Aud at 2:00 p.m.

The Rangers begin the showcase at 7:00 p.m. against the North Bay Battalion.
