Region’s crime rate up

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The crime rate in Waterloo Region increased by just over six per cent in 2018.

That according to Statistics Canada, which released the numbers on Monday.

The violent crime rate in the region was also up by over eight per cent.

Stats Can says the national crime rate was up for a fourth year in a row, even though it was still lower than it was a decade ago.

The severity of crime also rose by two per cent, according to the agency's statistical formula.

The agency says the increase was driven by more cases of fraud, sexual assault, shoplifting and other thefts.

But there were fewer break-ins and robberies.

The homicide rate also declined.

The finding is based on data from by police forces across the country, so it doesn't include crimes that weren't reported to police.
