Kitchener City Council declares a climate emergency

By Maddie Demarte

Kitchener City Council has unanimously voted to declare a climate emergency.

The city's 2019 to 2022 strategy plan looks to reduce greenhouse gases as one of its main priorities.

Ward 7 Councillor, Bil Ioannidis presented the motion and told The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS it shows that the city's values are aligned with its residents.

“Something that residents were actually wanting us to do, so I think this is just a natural fit for us, to let other levels of government know that we are serious, our residents want some action.”

Ioannidis says change will not happen overnight, but the motion sends a clear message to business and partners to look to environmentally sustainable policies.

Other aspects of the strategic plan include affordable housing, bike share programs, and an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
