The amphitheatre located behind the school has been deemed unsafe, but many Cambridge residents are calling for it to be restored.
According to the school board, it could cost close to $600,000 to restore the amphitheatre to its former glory.
Jane Herring is the Chair of the Waterloo Region District School Board, she told The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NEWS that “the lumber for the site is very old and decaying.”
She said there are two options moving forward. “One of the options of course is to tear the structure down, and another one, which is a costly one, is to restore it to its former glory.”
Due to the budget cuts, Herring says they have to allocate money where it is needed most, but she added, they are considering both options.
Meantime, Cambridge resident, Corina Harris is leading a group that aims to save the amphitheatre.
She said many people are interesting in saving it. “If you have ever spent time in the amphitheatre and in the space, you would understand completely why it is a vital assest to the GCI community.”
“We have had people who have pledged, and obviously they haven't given us their money yet, but we have had people pledge anywhere from 20 to 100,” Harris added that one person said they would pledge $10,000 to see the space restored.
An online survey was created by WRDSB to get people's feedback on the restoration of the amphitheatre. It is open until June 13.
