The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is in the process of installing warning booms upstream from their dams.
It's part of their annual spring safety procedures to warn paddlers, anglers and boaters of the dams' location and reduce the risk of injury or death.
The GRCA warns the water that surges through the gates and valves of the dam create strong undertows and currents around the area that can pin you underwater.
The booms are plastic floaters chained together in a row and can be orange or yellow.
The GRCA is in the process of replacing the old orange booms with yellow ones, in keeping with Transport Canada regulations.
The booms and buoys will be removed in the fall before winter comes.
Installation will take place on the following days if weather permits:
April 15-16 – Rockwood and Everton
April 29 – Conestogo and Woolwich
April 30 – Guelph and Shand Dam (Belwood)
May 6 – Byng Island (Dunnville)
May 7 – Caledonia and Wilkes Dam (Brantford)
May 8 – New Hamburg and Parkhill (Cambridge)
May 9 – Bissell and Drimmie (Elora)
May 10 – New Dundee, Baden and Wellesley
May 13 – Breslau
