Over 1,000 students suspended following immunization deadline

By Maddie Demarte

There were 1,032 students placed on academic suspension on Wednesday due to their out-of-date immunization records.

The suspension can last up to 20 days, but will end as soon as the records are completed and shown to public health.

David Aoki, Manager of Vaccine Preventable Diseases at the Region of Waterloo Public Health, told Kitchener Today with Brian Bourke on 570 NEWS, there are several opportunities for parents to complete their child's records. One of those being the first day of school.

“We send every student home on the first day of school with, you know, it's not designed for their situation, but it's designed for every student. So it just reminds parents to report their immunizations to us. So it's a good reminder to parents to say, 'Oh, I need to get these in.'”

He also says that almost 96 per cent of students in our region are up-to-date with their vaccinations.

Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act all primary and secondary students need to have proof of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningococcal disease, whooping cough and chickenpox.
