Fiqir Worku has been recognized, along with two other young leaders, for their strong leadership to eliminate racial discrimination and promote inclusivity and social equality.

All three were presented with the 2018 Lincoln M. Alexander Award by Lieutenant Governor, Elizabeth Dowdeswell on Monday.

Worku, 22, of Waterloo, is Vice President of the University of Waterloo Black Association for Student Expression, established a centre for racialized students at the university.

“The Lincoln Alexander Award recognizes exceptional individuals who have taken it upon themselves to challenge systemic discrimination, acting in substantive and distinctive ways to fight racism. I am delighted to celebrate this year's recipients as they continue the legacy of a trailblazer whose impact we mark every year on January 21.” Dowdeswell said in a release.

The award was created in 1993 to commemorate the legacy of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, who served as Ontario’s 24th Lieutenant Governor from 1985-1991.

The other 2018 recipients are North York's Lisa Wang and Manaal Chasso of Ottawa.
