Andrew Quattrin, the graduating captain of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s rugby team, has officially signed his first professional contract, joining the Toronto Arrows for their inaugural season in Major League Rugby (MLR).
Quattrin, a native of Holland Landing, Ont., was one of 13 players announced by the club on Tuesday afternoon as the team rounded out their initial 34-man roster.
Suiting up for five seasons for the purple and gold, the 6-0, 250 lbs. hooker enjoyed a stellar career at Laurier. A four-time OUA All-Star, Quattrin was a key member in rebuilding the Golden Hawks into one of the top programs in Ontario. In 2017, he became the first player in program history to be named the conference’s Most Valuable Player and this past year, he led the Hawks to their first OUA medal, capturing bronze back in November.
Joining Quattrin on the Arrows will be another former member of the Golden Hawks as John Moonlight (2005-2006) was also among the signings announced on Tuesday.
Toronto will play 16 regular season games over a 19-week span in its inaugural MLR season, with the club’s first eight matches all being played on the road.
The Arrows will open formal pre-season training on December 15 in Whitby, Ont.
Major League Rugby was formed in 2017 and features nine teams, with eight playing in the United States. Toronto will compete against clubs from New Orleans, Houston, Austin (Texas), New York, San Diego, Glendale (Colorado), Seattle and Utah.
