Top travel destinations for fall, winter 2018

By Erin Anderson

Fall officially arrives this evening, and if you're planning on doing some travelling this season – we have some advice.

Jennifer Weatherhead Harrington is Co-Founder of Travel & Style Magazine.

She tells Kitchener Today with Brian Bourke what some of the best destinations are for 2018.

“The top pick right now for fall and winter – and probably the most popular destination that Canadians are visiting – is Iceland. So Iceland has been pretty popular the past few years, but Canadians are still loving it – which is weird that we want to go to another cold country. Iceland is so unique and beautiful though – and a lot of people are taking advantage of a stopover there before heading over to the UK or other parts of Europe.”

Weatherhead Harrington says Iceland can be an expensive place to visit, but the flights are pretty cheap.

“South Africa is also very high on our list. I always think of South Africa as a country that has something for everyone – it is a long journey to get there, but it's definitely worth it. There's a beautiful wine region and an incredible coastline and wildlife. We also have Japan on the list – which is really growing in terms of female solo travel. There's also incredible food, and landing in Tokyo is just a mind-blowing experience if you come from Canada.”

Weatherhead Harrington adds visiting the United States is still very popular – despite some mixed feelings on the current political climate.

“It's still so close to us, and easy to get to for quick weekend getaways. Texas is always a huge destination for Canadians – something about BBQ and the hot weather, that combination seems to work for us. But they have a beautiful wine country too, with amazing wines and really great food .. so that's really pulling Canadians in.”

When it comes to which demographic is travelling more in 2018, Weatherhead Harrington says it's a shift from what we've seen previously.

“Millenials are spending so much money on travel right now. They're really looking to get that experience – as opposed to working really hard, saving up money, and doing it later. They're actually having huge impacts on the way that travel companies, or hotels run their businesses as well. I think the travel world is really geared towards Millenials now, so they can travel the way they want to.”
