Police investigating after stranger approaches kids at Westheights PS

A warning has been issued to local parents after an incident at a Kitchener public school.
570 NEWS received word that a message was sent out sometime Friday, after two students were approached by a stranger at the playground behind Westheights Public School.
The message says it happened around 7 p.m. Thursday as two students – one from Westheights, and one from Driftwood Park PS – were playing on school property.
A man driving a white van allegedly approached the two and offered them candy – but thanks to quick-thinking, the pair safely ran home and informed their parents.
The suspect is described as a white male, believed to be in his 20s.
The message was sent to parents by Ron Paling – the Interim Principal at Meadowlane Public School.
He says police were notified, and they’re asking the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.
The Waterloo Region District School Board has sent the following statement to 570 NEWS.
“Our students’ safety is a top priority for Waterloo Region District School Board, and we applaud our students for knowing how to respond to a situation such as this. As this event was reported to the police we defer to our partners at WRPS for further comment.”
On Saturday, a spokesperson for WRPS confirmed police were notified, and are investigating.
“Yes, we are investigating and asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at that time to please call police.”
