Rangers top line dominates in debut

By CHRIS POPE

Logan Brown made an immediate impact.

He had three assists and his line-mates were the beneficiaries. Kole Sherwood buried a hat-trick and added a helper, while Adam Mascherin scored his 31st of the year, and added three assists of his own.

The Kitchener Rangers slapped the Saginaw Spirit 6-2 at the Aud Friday night.

“It takes some real brains to put that line together,” laughed Rangers head coach Jay McKee. “Logan is arguably one of, if not the top centre in the league. He’s going to find anyone you put on his wings. It was certainly an experiment that panned out.”

“It was a lot of fun, playing with Woody and Mash,” said Brown, who played his first OHL game since December 10th. “You just give them the puck, and they can put the puck in the back of the net at will. That was one of the big reasons why I wanted to come here, was to play with those two guys.”

The Spirit jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but goals from Sherwood, Riley Damiani and Eric Guest in the first gave the Rangers the lead heading into the first intermission for the 17th time this season; all of them wins.

McKee was impressed with his line of Guest, Rickard Hugg and Jonathan Yantsis.

“We’re in the middle of six games in 11 games, and when you have your fourth line going out and generating offence, playing in the opposition’s zone, and grinding them out, it really balances things out,” said McKee.

Mario Culina remains undefeated as a Ranger, picking up his sixth win in as many starts.

The Rangers have won five straight for the second time this year, and seven-of-eight since the trade deadline. Oddly enough, through 48 games, they have the same record at home, as they do on the road: 16-7-1.

Kitchener is on the road tonight in Flint, to face the Firebirds.
