HALIFAX – A jury has found Christopher Garnier guilty of punching and strangling Nova Scotia police officer Catherine Campbell and using a compost bin to dump her body.
The Nova Scotia Supreme Court jury delivered its verdicts after 4.5 hours of deliberations.
The 30-year-old Halifax man was charged with second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body following Campbell’s death in September 2015.
The prosecution had alleged Garnier punched and strangled the 36-year-old Truro police constable after they met at a Halifax bar while she was off-duty, and used a compost bin to dispose of her body near Halifax’s Macdonald Bridge.
Defence lawyer Joel Pink had argued that Campbell died accidentally during consensual rough sex.
