Canada to abstain from UN vote on Trump’s move to relocate embassy to Jerusalem

OTTAWA – Canada will abstain from a contentious United Nations vote today on Donald Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
A spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says the government is disappointed in the resolution on the floor of the UN General Assembly.
Adam Austen says it is one-sided and does not advance prospects for peace and that is why the government will abstain.
The federal government has said little in recent days on the pending vote.
The Liberals’ official position is that the status of Jerusalem can be resolved only as part of a broader settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
Freeland had discussed the issue with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday, and suggested they agreed to disagree.
