1,400 staff at casinos and slots operations around the Waterloo Region area will soon be under new management, but those workers do not have to worry about getting a pink slip for Christmas.
OLG has awarded a contract for private-sector managers to take over day-to-day operations at the Slots at Mohawk Racetrack, Flamboro Downs, and Grand River Raceway; and the OLG Casino in Brantford.
All workers will become employees of Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, and Clairvest Group.
But OLG says part of this 20-year contract ensures no one can be fired, laid off, or transferred for the first 12 months.
The companies also have to provide for the workers’ benefits and pension needs.
And a statement from OLG says this deal is expected to create another 1,600 jobs.
In August, Great Canadian and Brookfield Business Partners LP won a bid to run OLG Slots at Woodbine; OLG Slots at Ajax Downs; and the Great Blue Heron Casino located in the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
Shares in Great Canadian gained more than 10 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange following the announcement.
