Driver extricated from wreckage of serious three-vehicle crash on Highway 6

Wellington County OPP say a man was trapped under his car on Highway 6, following a head-on crash this morning south of Fergus.

Police say the vehicle he was driving flipped upside down and came to rest on its roof, after colliding with another vehicle between Wellington Road 22 and 6th Line, before 8 a.m.

A third vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Constable Marylou Schwindt says firefighters had to use the jaws of life to extricate the man from the wreckage. Schwindt says he was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, and later transported to Hamilton for further treatment, where he remains.

The other two drivers sustained minor injuries.

Schwindt says it’s unclear if slippery roads were a factor.

“We all woke up this morning — it wasn’t a nice day outside,” she says, “so leave yourself extra time, be weary of the conditions … basically just slow down and get where you’re going safely.”

A police investigation has shut down the affected portion of Highway 6 in both directions.
