Faculty strike enters second week at Conestoga and other colleges

As the faculty stike at Conestoga College, and Ontario’s other 23 colleges, enters its second week, there is no end in sight.

One of the strike captains at the Conestoga picket line tells 570NEWS if it rains or snows they’ll keep on with their picket.

One teacher on the line tells us he has to work three contract jobs at different colleges just to have a career.

And as a contract worker, he has no seniority, and has to reapply for the same jobs over and over again every year.

This is a scheduled reading week at Conestoga, but students are still feeling the stress of the labour disruption, and wondering what it will mean for their semester.

OPSEU is looking for better job security and input into academic procedures at the colleges.

Conestoga College presdient, John Tibbits, has said 68 per cent of the full-time teaching hours are taught by full-time professors.

International students have been reassured they will not be penalized for delays caused by the strike.

Visas for international students require them to be in school in order to stay in the country.

But Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is reassuring international students they will not face enforcement action because of the strike.
