Waterloo Region has thrown its hat in the ring for Amazon’s new giant second headquarters.
The combined bid with the GTA was officially submitted Thursday.
Amazon is expected to narrow down a short list of candidates in the new few months.
President of the Waterloo Economic Development Corporation, Tony LaMantia talks about the challenges of convincing an American company to set up shop in Canada. “You know it’s really about talent and the ability to supply talent in the years ahead and the quality of that. I think Canada has a great shot and I believe that the Toronto Region and Waterloo bid should stand out.”
The City of Guelph, University of Guelph and area regions have also come together to support the Toronto Region’s bid for Amazon HQ2.
Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie says, “This is an unparalleled opportunity for the entire Innovation Corridor. Guelph is pleased to bring our strengths to the table to make Toronto Region’s bid even more competitive. Those strengths include a pool of highly skilled talent and the research strengths of the University of Guelph.”
The headquarters is expected to create some 50,000 new jobs along with billions in investment.
