‘Gatekeeper Project’ offers workshops to help protect older adults in our community

October 1st marks National Seniors Day, and the local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association is using the occasion to help raise awareness.

CMHA Waterloo-Wellington has launched the Gatekeeper Project — which aims to help vulnerable older adults who are at risk of abuse within our community.

Gatekeeper Project Facilitator Manon Germain says they’ll be hosting workshops starting Monday.

“Elder Abuse Ontario talks about the reality that two to 10 per cent of elders will experience some sort of abuse — whether it’s physical, mental, sexual, or neglect.”

According to the World Health Organization, only one in 24 cases of elder abuse are reported.

The ‘Gatekeeper’ workshops are completely free and will run until March of 2018.
