Heat warning issued for Waterloo Region this weekend

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Waterloo Region and much of Southern Ontario, just as the official start of Fall was ushered in this afternoon.

The national weather agency says we can expect temperatures to soar into the low-30s this weekend, with humidex values nearing an uncomfortable 40 degrees.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says a normal high for this time of the year is 19 degrees.

“I don’t think I’ve seen something like this for a long, long time. This is quite rare,” says Coulson. “Certainly getting a warm day in late September or early October is not unheard of, but to string this many of them together with these types of values is not something we’ve seen in the last little while.”

In addition to temperatures being well above normal, they’ll perhaps even be record-breaking.

“If in fact we do make it to 31 degrees as our daytime high on Saturday, that would break the record for September 23rd in the record books,” Coulson says, “which is currently 29.4, set all the way back in 1936.”

But he says we’ll see some relief from the heat and a return to more seasonal temperatures late next week, with cooler air, cloud and shower activity moving in on Wednesday.
