OPP hoping to educate public on proper 9-1-1 calls

So far this year, Ontario Provincial Police have received more than 142,000 calls, while in all of 2016, they received almost 300,000. They determined that over 2000 of those calls were pocket dials, but 30,000 remained as unknown wireless calls.

“It ties up valuable lines to our dispatchers and call-takers, which could essentially put someone’s safety or property in jeopardy,” explains Sergeant Dave Rektor with OPP.

If you do accidentally call 9-1-1, he says you should call the administrative line back, to let them know that you did accidentally call.

This fall, they have launched the #KnowWhenToCall campaign, which is aimed at educating the public. OPP will use it’s social media platforms to remind the public to be careful about unintentional or “pocket dial” calls.

Sergeant Rektor adds that if you ever question whether your situation warrants a call to 9-1-1, you can find more information on the OPP website.
