Overflow of asylum seekers reaching Ontario

By MIKEVLASVELD

Asylum seekers who crossed into Canada from the U.S. are starting to arrive at Cornwall’s Nav Centre.

About 7,000 people have been intercepted at the Quebec-U.S. border over the last six weeks — 3,800 of whom have come in since the beginning of August.

Federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau says 300 rooms have now been set aside at the Nav Centre, and food is being provided.

Some of those seeking asylum in Canada started arriving at the Nav Centre by bus yesterday.

More than 80 per cent of the newcomers are from Haiti, as the U.S. administration considers ending a program that granted Haitians temporary protected status following a massive earthquake in 2010.

Garneau adds, everything is under control and Canada’s security has not been compromised.
