Disaster relief available for victims of June flood

The province is now taking applications from residents in Woolwich, Mapleton and Minto who suffered property damage due to the June flooding.
Homeowners, small businesses, farmers and non-for-profit organizations can apply to be reimbursed for basic or essential costs related to the storm, which saw a month’s worth of rain get dumped on some areas in less than two hours.
Minister of Municipal Affairs Bill Mauro tells 570 NEWS the program is not intended to be a replacement for insurance.
“The program looks to ensure as best we’re able that people have a home that is safe, that is habitable,” Mauro says. “Anything that might meet the criteria of being essential and necessary for you to live in your home would be something that would be eligible for you to make an application.”
The Grand River Conservation Authority recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall between June 22nd and 23rd, forcing the closure of roads and prompting evacuations. A rainfall event of this magnitude hadn’t been seen since 1974.
Mauro says when you do submit your application, make sure it’s as clear and complete as is necessary.
“If not, sometimes that can potentially slow the process down,” he says. “We understand there’s a great deal of emotion associated with these situations, and everyday seems like an eternity for people that have been affected.”
