Use caution at Conestogo Lake due to blue-green algae: GRCA

The Grand River Conservation Authority is urging us to use caution near Conestogo Lake due to the possible presence of blue-green algae.
The GRCA says algae blooms were spotted this week, and they may contain a toxin called ‘microcystin’– which can make us seriously ill if we, or our pets, ingest it.
The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change was called in Thursday to take some samples, and official results are expected sometime next week.
In the meantime, the GRCA is offering these tips to Conestogo Lake park users, recreational users, and cottagers surrounding the reservoir.
- Don’t swim in the reservoir
- Keep children and pets away from the algae
- Avoid contact with the algae
- Don’t eat fish from the lake
- Don’t use the water for drinking or any other purpose
- Boating is permitted, but boaters should avoid touching the algae.
