A Cambridge man has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years, after the brutal killing of his wife.
Clark Sauve was convicted in May on second-degree murder charges, following the shooting death of Linda Sauve as she was sleeping in the couple’s Rouse Avenue home in Cambridge, just days after Christmas in 2014.
Ontario Superior Court Justice H.S Arrell said the court doesn’t sanction such horrific acts of violence, and acknowledges the fact that a totally innocent person in their most vulnerable state was shot and killed for no apparent reason.
Court heard at Thursday’s sentencing hearing that Sauve and his wife of 40 years had a happy marriage anchored by deep and lasting love.
So why did Linda have to die? It’s a question Sauve’s daughter says she’ll never be able to answer for her children, as she read her victim impact statement through tears. “I miss my mom,” she said.
Crown prosecutor Cynthia Jennison was requesting Sauve serve 14 years in prison before any chance of parole, citing a lack of remorse and his attempts to redirect the police investigation. Defense lawyer James Marentette asked for 10 years, saying Sauve was a hard working and contributing member of society up until the day his wife died.
Marentette said Sauve — who’s confined to a wheelchair and an oxygen tank — has suffered from immense stress and depression related to his very poor health, which started to deteriorate in 2011 following a head injury.
When asked by Justice Arrell if he had anything to say, Sauve replied “I didn’t do it. I honestly didn’t do it.”
Sauve has been and currently is on suicide watch in custody.
