Public hearing on proposed minimum wage hike set for this morning in Kitchener

It’s one of the hottest debates in our province.

No, not the cost of hydro, but the proposed minimum wage hike.

Premier Kathleen Wynne is proposing $15/hr.

One of the groups against the hike is The Canadian Federation of Independent Business. They say it’ll spell disaster for some of its 42,000 members in Ontario.

Plamen Petkov is the Vice President of CFIB in Ontario. He tells 570 NEWS that this hike is unprecedented. “From what the CFIB has heard from its members is incredibly disappointing. This has come too quick, with next to no consultation or oversight from shareholders in the business community.”

Petkov adds, it’s an election ploy mastered by Wynne. “You have to think, if the election wasn’t a year away, would we be dealing with this right now. This won’t stimulate the economy. If we raise minimum wage to 15 an hour, why not make it 25 or 50. It’s a slippery slope from here on out.”

MPP’s have been touring the province to hold open door meetings on proposed Bill 148.

It makes its stop this morning in Kitchener at 9:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn on Fairway Road South.
