Regional Police warn of new phone scams

Police are reminding us to use extra caution after a number of new phone scams have been making the rounds throughout Waterloo Region.
The first incident happened last month on June 16th. A woman speaking Polish phoned a homeowner, and led them to believe their niece was in trouble and required money.
A short time later, a man dressed in police-looking attire showed up to get the funds — but it turned out the homeowner’s niece was fine, and it was all a scam.
Then this week, Regional Police received a disturbing call from a man making threats against our Federal Government and Prime Minister.
The man had given police an address, but when officers arrived, they found an innocent homeowner who had also been receiving threatening calls from the man.
It’s alleged the man spoke Hindi and had phoned her several times to scam her,. He then phoned police to try and put some extra pressure on her.
Police are reminding us that these types of scams pop up often throughout the year, and to never hand over any money or financial information without confirming their legitimacy first.
