Two local academics honoured for their fight against sexual violence

Advocating for sexual violence prevention has paid off for two local academics.

Sarah Wiley and Chris Moulton are recipients of the first Provincial Draw-The-Line Post-Secondary Sexual Violence Prevention Awards. Wiley from the University of Waterloo and Moulton from the University of Guelph are being recognized by White Ribbon for their outstanding efforts challenging their efforts against violence.

Moulton says Jack Layton is one of the driving forces behind White Ribbon.

White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.

Wiley says her job, this past year, was to advocate on behalf of undergraduate students in universities and the government about sexual violence prevention. “We advocated for education to be added to the university curriculum about consent and responding to sexual violence and healthy relationships,” she says.

Moulton says he’s part of a large group of men who have decided they want to bring their voices forward. “We are raising awareness about violence against women and hopefully being part of changing the culture of that.”

Wiley says a big project for her is to get more campus wide education and training for students.

Moulton says, “There are so many different levels to the challenges that we face and I think the first thing to do is to talk about it.”

Wiley adds that an individual student can make a big impact and we all just need to use our voices.
