Fireworks safety tips for Canada Day

If you’re going to be setting off your own fireworks tonight, fire officials have a message of caution.
Public Education Officer John Percy says we need to make safety a priority as we celebrate Canada Day, especially around kids.
“Sparklers and fireworks are explosive devices, and have to be treated with respect and care. Sparklers will ignite at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit — so to put that into perspective, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.”
Percy says there are several injuries to children every year in Canada due to fireworks.
“From burns to the hand, arms, clothing catching on fire, those are some the high hazards. Also, if any adult is setting these off, you have to be safe distance away from buildings and structures. If it’s windy at all, we don’t want you setting them off.”
Percy adds that it’s both illegal and dangerous to smoke around fireworks, and anyone setting them off shouldn’t be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Some other tips to keep in mind include carefully reading and following the label directions on fireworks packaging, and keeping a hose or pail of water close by when discharging them.
