New program fast tracks global tech talent

Local tech companies are applauding a program from the federal government that will allow them to attract high-end talent at “warp speed.”
The new Global Skills Visa Program means Canadian companies can bring in international talent in less than two weeks, instead of six months like before.
The truth is Canada, and specifically Waterloo Region is on the map when it comes to the best places to live and work.
Local tech experts say more and more highly skilled immigrants are looking to work here, in part, due to a less than favourable political climate in the United States and Britain.
The Global Skills Visa Program means some of the truly unique talent in the world can be offered a job and start working in Canada in just 10 days.
Director of Talent Programs at Communitech, Andrea Gilbrook, joined the Mike Farwell show Tuesday and says that the old system was just not practical.
“Most companies can’t wait six months for someone to fill a job, it’s just not practical from a productivity perspective,” she says.
The Global Skills Visa Program is part of a 2 year pilot project.
