SIU clears WRPS officers of wrongdoing in 2016 death

The Special Investigations Unit has cleared five Regional Police officers in the death of a man in Kitchener who was struggling against the paramedics trying to save his life.

This happened back January 30th, 2016, in Kitchcner, at a residence near Lancaster St. West, and Bridgeport Rd. East.

Paramedics called for police help as they dealt with a man described as overdosing, delirious and agitated, and about to go into cardiac arrest.

SIU spokesperson, Monica Hudon says while police were trying to help restrain him, the man put something in his mouth and chewed it.

A toxicology report later showed the man died of acute toxicity of methamphetamine.

There were no physical injuries to account for the man’s death.

A statement from SIU Director, Tony Loparco, says, “In my opinion, on the totality of the evidence, the man was regrettably an uncooperative patient.”
