A centre dedicated to the music and life of Stompin’ Tom Connors will open its doors on Canada’s 150th birthday.
The 1.2-million dollar centre in Skinners Pond, P-E-I, will preserve Connors’ boyhood home and the nearby schoolhouse he attended.
Anne Arsenault, general manager of the group that developed the centre, says July 1st is perfect timing.
Connors was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, placed in the care of Children’s Aid at age eight and adopted a year later by a family in Skinners Pond.
He ran away four years later to hitchhike across the country and, eventually, perform his own songs with an old guitar to support himself.
Arsenault says the centre will host a Stompin’ Tom-themed dinner theatre, a gift shop, and a recording studio where visitors can “record a song with Stompin’ Tom.”
Exhibits on display include his gold records, boots, cowboy hat, and guitar.
