Opposition slams province for spending $50K on Canada Goose jackets

By News Staff

The Opposition is calling out the province for spending more than $50,000 on Canada Goose jackets for government officials working in northern Ontario.

Ontario PC Deputy Leader Sylvia Jones said her party learned, through a Freedom of Information Request, that the Ministry of Children and Youth Services spent $53,948 on parkas in 2015 and 2016.

“It is incomprehensible that the Liberal government is so out of touch with the needs of Ontarians that they can spend $53,948 on luxury Canada Goose parkas while families and children are not getting the service they need,” Jones said in a statement.

“At the same time the government decided to cut off an important therapy for children on the autism spectrum, the then-minister (Tracy MacCharles) was buying luxury goods for her staff.”

Canada Goose was the only company that submitted a bid when the government made a request for tender for the jackets, and Premier Kathleen Wynne said the province got a “very deep discount.”

“These are jackets that were bought by the government to provide warmth for people who are working with young, disadvantaged kids in the far north,” she said at a news conference on Friday.

“They’re not jackets that belong to the people; they belong to the government. They will be reused.”
