St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener has added some new heart doctors to its roster.
The hospital says the expanded team could cut wait times in half by next year for electrophysiology and ablation now faced by local patients who have to travel to London or Hamilton.
St. Mary’s added one new heart surgeon, for a total of four, and five new cardiologists to bring the total to 16, with another one coming this summer.
They have also added one electrophysiologist, bringing the number of electrophysiologists to two.
There are now four cardiac surgeons, including Dr. Jennifer Higgins.
The hospital says before these latest hires, area heart patients had to travel to Hamilton or down to the 401 to London and could be dealing with wait times of 100 days.
In 2015-16, over 800 cardiac bypass and valve surgeries were performed at St. Mary’s.
