Local representatives in Ottawa for Daughters of the Vote

Hundreds of Canadian women are gathering in the nation’s capital this week for Daughters of the Vote, an event marking 100 years since the first Canadian women were granted the right to vote in federal elections.

A few young women from Waterloo Region are in Ottawa for the occasion, which will see 338 women take their seats in Parliament and share their vision for Canada.

Among them is Kitchener Centre’s Carly Pettinger, who says she’s excited to hear from other young women across the country.

“I’m going to learn from women who have a different lived experience than me, and that will improve my activism,” says Pettinger.

Pettinger says on International Women’s Day, she thinks of the women mentors she’s had.

“Women who have fought every single step of the way to get us to have all the rights and privileges that we enjoy today,” she adds.

Also attending the week’s activities are Waterloo’s Karley George, a media production student at Ryerson University; Kitchener-Conestoga’s Katarina Milicic, an environment and business student at the University of Waterloo; and Guelph’s Nadia Gilani, a business technology analyst at Deloitte.
