Kitchener’s St. Mary’s ranked first in patient safety

A big honour for one of our local hospitals.

St. Mary’s has landed at the top of the list when it comes to patient safety.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information looked at 90 hospitals across the country and compared actual deaths at the hospital to a
predicted number of deaths which is a great indicator of patient safety.

This is the second time in the last five year St. Mary’s has ranked first and President Don Shilton says less patent falls and quicker result times contributed.

“We have seen a 50 per cent reduction in patient falls at the hospital and our lab has done great work at getting results back to the emergency department in a faster period of time. They used to aim for 90 minutes and they now aim for 46 minutes.”

Thirty per cent decrease in days patients are on ventilators and reduction of more than 50 per cent in cases of hospital acquired C. difficile infection and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) were also contributing factors.

Shilton says having a hospital sitting at the top of the list attracts top talent to the region.

“We believe this will not only help the hospital attract the top talent, this will also help everyone in Waterloo Region.”

Grand River Hospital has also been recognized and has landed at number 6 in patient safety across the country for the third straight year.

Mark Karjaluoto with Grand River Hospital says they are have worked to steadily improve patent care at the hospital over the last decade.

“About 10 years ago our results were not been very good and there has been a dedicated effort to improve that and for the last three years we have had results that have been within Canada’s top ten, and we are happy about that.”
