The new 155,000 square foot Waterloo Costco opened on Tuesday at 8am.
Costco Wholesale, Eastern Canada Vice-President & General Manager, Pierre Riel and Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky were among those in attendance for the grand opening.
The new warehouse-club is located at 930 Erb Street West, across from the Waterloo landfill.
The location was agreed upon in April 2015. That’s when the city and Rice Commercial Group reached an agreement at the Ontario Municipal Board.
Some major road work then needed to be done in the area to address the increased traffic flow. That included the construction of two new roundabouts at the Costco entrance. Lanes were also added on Ira Needles near Erb.
“What we really wanted is for citizens to be able to drive to that area and drive through that area, it was through that compromise that we came up with that idea for the Costco opening once the roundabout and four lanes are complete.” Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky told 570 News.
“Costco is a large operation employing about 200 people, good paying jobs bringing those to Waterloo Region and with that comes a lot of traffic, and we need to make sure we can get people in there, and get them out of there.” added Jaworsky.
He says there are plans in two years to add an entrance from the Columbia Street side of the Costco.
