Laurier to host concussion symposium on Saturday

Concussion awareness is the topic of conversation at Wilfrid Laurier University this weekend.

A team of students and professors at the university are giving a free talk about head injury management on Saturday March, 5.

The goal of the talk is to educate the community on the importance of treating head injuries.

Mike Cinelli is a Kinesiology professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and organized the event. He says that generally public awareness has grown, but now it’s important to take the next step in improving treatment education.

“The question that everybody ask is, what now?(after a concussion) I think that’s the part we are still learning, and I think the more you expose people to the things that you are supposed to do the more it becomes ingrained.” said Cinelli.

Katie Mitchell is a physiotherapist and athletic therapist will be speaking at the forum. She has experience treating head injuries on the sidelines of sport events and at her clinical practice. She says that it s clear people are taking head injuries more serious.

“I don’t think there is a greater prevalence of injury, I think it’s just that people are recognizing it more and people are asking a lot more questions, and it is something more serious than a just a knock to the head that will go away.” said Mitchell.

The forum is free to attend and will be held in the Science Building room N1001 at Wilfrid Laurier University. It goes from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Former Kitchener Ranger and serious head injury survivor Ben Fanelli will be on hand to deliver a speech.
