Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky is offering a special opportunity for any local youth interested in learning about local government.
The City’s ‘Council for the Day’ contest officially opened today for all Grade 5 students in Waterloo, and gives them the opportunity to submit an idea for the City and how to make it a better place to live.
“We’ve targeted Grade 5 students throughout Waterloo to come up with their one idea for Waterloo– how to make the City better for all of us. Since the students are studying local government, and federal and provincial politics in Grade 5, we think it’s important to give them that personal reach. I will attend many of the schools, certainly for the winners, they’ll also spend the day with me,” said Jaworsky.
Jaworsky added that they launched the contest last year as well, and it was a success on many levels.
“In 2015, we experienced over 100 entries from students throughout Waterloo– ranging from ideas about the environment to what they think Uptown should look like. It was just outstanding to hear from these 10 year old students, what they think we should invest in.”
Jaworsky, along with council members, will select eight students as winners of the contest. One lucky student will even act as mayor and introduce Jaworsky at the State of the City address on April 20, 2016.
The contest’s deadline is March 21st, 2016.
