Typing slower may be secret to better writing according to UW study

A new study from the University of Waterloo has found a way to improve your writing.
The secret is simple, slow down.
Researchers saw two groups of students write an essay, one group typing with both hands and another using one hand.
Using text-analysis software, the team discovered that some aspects of essay writing, such as sophistication of vocabulary, improved when participants used only one hand to type.
The researchers think that while typing with both hands students type the first words that comes to mind. However, when typing with one hand and slowing down the thinking process, students have more time for internal search and use different words.
Srdan Medimoric is the lead author of the study, he says that it’s important to recognize how the tools we use affect our thoughts.
“I think at this day in age, when technologies are developing rapidly, its important to understand the way these technologies can shape our thinking.’ Said Medimoric.
The research does not suggest ways to slow down your typing, and they do not suggest that students write essays with one hand. However they say the study acts as a reminder to slow down, and think while typing.
