Waterloo Region’s housing starts up slightly in December

A slight uptick in new home construction in Waterloo Region.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports housing starts totalled just over 3,500 last month, up from 3,400 in November.

CMHC credits the increase to higher single-detached and apartment starts.

Senior Market Analyst Erica McLerie says, “Strong demand for ground-oriented homes, a tight resale market and the relatively affordable home prices” in the region “have boosted starts for single-detached homes and townhomes in the past year.”

She points to “Strengthening employment and population growth” for supporting the demand for housing.
