Special weather statement issued, heavy rain to start Tuesday night

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for most of southwestern Ontario, including Waterloo Region.

They say a developing fall storm will affect most of the province mid-week, with rain and strong winds. Waterloo Region and surrounding areas can expect heavy rain and wind as the storm system moves in, which is expected to begin Tuesday evening.

The heaviest rain in the region is expected Wednesday, when showers will to continue through the night, and strong winds will pick up though the day from the south and southeast.

Rainfall amounts are still somewhat uncertain, but they expect between 25 and 40 mm for most areas.

Additionally, strong and gusty southwesterly winds are forecast to develop on Wednesday, with gusts likely reaching up to 70 km/h. They say even stronger winds are possible near the eastern ends of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, where wind gusts may approach the warning criterion of 90 km/h.

Off-and-on showers will continue through Thursday, tapering early Friday morning, along with the wind activity.
