The University of Waterloo Senate approved a three year trial run of Fall Reading Break following advocacy efforts by the Federation of Students.
The decision was made at the senate meeting on October 19th, 2015. The Fall Break Task Force is made up of student leaders and university administrators.
President of the Student Federation Chris Lolas tells 570 News that this new break will students with their stress levels.
“Just the fact that in the middle of the term you have a lot of assignments piling up, mid-terms are coming down and it can be very stressful especially in the fall term, we have thousands and thousands of new students and this is the first here at a university setting. It can be very stressful so we felt that and the students felt that having those extra days off in the fall term would help with them cope with all of that workload”.
Over 73% of the students were in favour of the break.
This means students receive two additional days off after Thanksgiving weekend, and classes begin on the Thursday of Orientation Week.
