Another online posting raising concerns at Laurier

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a Snapchat that has raised some concerns at Wilfrid Laurier University.

The university is open as police have determined there is no immediate danger. However, there will be increased security at the Waterloo campus on Friday.

Police tell us the Snapchat included the image of a man holding what police have determined to be a replica weapon. A caption referenced the science building, and a number of related Snapchat images suggested that the individual making the post was familiar with Laurier’s campus in Waterloo.

“It is unfortunate we have individuals in this community who appear to delight in attempts to intimidate others around them,” said WRPS Chief Bryan Larkin. “Know that the Waterloo Regional Police are working diligently to identify the person(s) responsible for this post and lay charges as warranted. The safety of our academic institutions is of paramount importance to our police service.”

Last Friday, Laurier’s Waterloo campus was placed in lockdown after an online threat.

A man from the United Kingdom is now facing charges in connection with that case. 22-year-old Daniel Ransem is due back in court in January.
