Report on Hydro One billing to be released today

TORONTO – Ontario’s ombudsman will release a report today into Hydro One’s billing practices.

Andre Marin looked into the Crown Corporation’s transparency, timeliness and effectiveness in responding to customer complaints.

Several themes have emerged from Marin’s investigation ahead of the report’s release, including incorrect bills, large “estimated” bills and unexpectedly large payments withdrawn from customers’ bank accounts.

Opposition parties had called for the government to step in and order Hydro One to end the practice, but Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli said he did not want to interfere in the ombudsman’s investigation.

Hydro One said in March that it would work with Marin to resolve the issue.

Marin has been looking into Hydro One billing for more than a year and said the number of complaints he has received recently passed 10,000 _ the highest total for any of his investigations to date.
