12:00 PM – Humour expert
In studio: Dr. Ken Shonk, Retired family physician and humour expert
We could all use a little humour in life…and laughter never hurt anyone. In fact…it’s been known as ‘the best medicine’ for years. We’re pleased to have retired family physician and humour expert, Dr. Ken Shonk in studio with us this afternoon. It’s a sneak peak on humour, laughter and happiness – his lecture tonight will celebrate the 18th anniversary of the Laurier Association for Lifelong Learning (LALL). It’s today in the Senate and Board Chamber on Laurier’s Waterloo campus at 7PM. Shonk’s lecture, “Jest for the Health of It,” will discuss the healing benefits of humour and its application in stress management, relationships, parenting, and to the aging process.
12:30 PM – T.O. Police Body Cameras
Christopher Schneider, Associate Professor, (who studies police and technology) Wilfrid Laurier University
Toronto police have launched a pilot project to test body-worn cameras for its officers – joining a growing number of forces trying out the technology…which has been greeted with a mix of optimism and caution. The year-long project in Canada’s most populous city will see 100 officers wear the cameras as three different models are tested. A report on the exercise will be completed by June 2016. Staff. Supt. Tom Russell says he thinks this project has the potential to strengthen the policing profession, and the potential to strengthen their relationship with the community and enhance public trust. The cameras will be activated whenever there is a call for service or someone is being investigated. Informal conversations with citizens and interactions without an investigative element will not require the activation of the cameras. Officers have been trained on privacy and human rights issues and will have to tell people when the cameras are rolling in most situations.
