10:00 – Teacher’s Strike
Luisa D’Amato, Columnist, The Record
As a strike deadline looms closer for high school students at the Waterloo Region District School Board – one local columnist, Luisa D’Amato starts her piece off with a simple statement: ‘you’ve got to be kidding me.’ She sites good pay, security, great benefits and long holidays and wonders…what are they striking for? In just under two weeks – May 4th – teachers at our local board, along with Peel Region – could join Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa, who have been on the picket lines for a few days now.
10:30 – Mayfair demo
Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor, City of Kitchener
Kae Elgie, President, Architectural Conservancy Ontario — North Waterloo Region
The official decision could be made today to demolish the historic Mayfair Hotel in downtown Kitchener. A special city council meeting is taking place in half an hour – councillors will be presented with a recommendation to rescind plans to designate the property on Young Street as being of cultural heritage value under the Ontario Heritage Act. The move comes after a water main break earlier this month and subsequent inspections that determined the foundation was damaged and the building was no longer safe. If passed, a demolition permit could be issued as early as Monday, with work to bring down the building beginning as soon as possible. The Architectural Conservancy Ontario — North Waterloo Region group will be at the meeting and the President takes time to join us now. Kae Elgie says many community landmarks have had their time extended through ‘The Right Advice at the Right Time’ – and that the Mayfair Hotel deserves a chance.
