10:00 – Budget

The Conservative government has made good on its promise to deliver a balanced budget in advance of the scheduled federal election in October, but it comes at a cost. Introduced yesterday by Finance Minister Joe Oliver, it projects a $1.4-billion surplus for 2015-16, but the government’s rainy-day contingency fund, usually a robust $3 billion. will be just $1 billion until 2019. The budget also reveals that the controversial sale earlier this month of the government’s remaining shares of General Motors yielded a net gain of $2.1 billion, fully half of which has been applied to the bottom line.
10:30 – Busking by-law?

Following a lively debate at Cambridge City Hall, a motion has been passed to consider a busking by-law in the city. While some councillors think some sort of by-law should be in place – others feel it would be a waste of time. Some say that putting something on paper – even if it’s just to make the activity legal – is the way to go. The discussion stems from an incident that happened in March – 19 year old local resident Liv Gains was cuffed and fined 65 dollars under the ‘safe streets act’ for busking in front of the Giant Tiger on Main street.
